Klever Rojas, David Bustamante, Martín Rivera, Paula Del Salto and Biandona Recalde are the students, who have been actively involved in the AI for Inclusive Urban Sidewalks project in Quito, Ecuador. In this interview, they share their experience and talk about the value and importance of the project for their city.

Por qué aceras más accesibles e inclusivas son importantes para las personas con discapacidad en las ciudades?
Klever Rojas: Para la facilidad de circulación para los transeúntes en la ciudad
David Bustamante: Para la circulación segura, regular y libre de todo usuario. Es mportante la movilidad de los peatones con cualquier tipo de discapacidad.
Martín Rivera: Es importante facilitar la movilidad para todas las personas. Poder transportarse libremente es un derecho que no debe verse limitado por una mala infraestructura.
Paula Del Salto: Porque con aceras más accesibles pueden movilizarse mejor y evitar riesgos y accidents
Biandona Recalde: Permiten la facilidad de movilidad sin causar accidentes por obstáculos que se puedan presentar.
Por qué este proyecto de Inteligencia Artificial en movilidad inclusiva es tan importante para tu ciudad?
Klever Rojas: Es importante para la seguridad de los transeúntes.
David Bustamante: Para tener una imagen clara de la circulación y como esta se presenta en la actualidad dentro de la ciudad y que las personas con discapacidad puedan circular de manera segura y fácil dentro de los pasos peatonales o lugares de circulación.
Martín Rivera: Ayudará a visualizar lo mal planteado que está el sistema peatonal, y solucionarlo.
Paula Del Salto: Por la seguridad de todos los habitants.
Biandona Recalde: Porque existen muchas barreras para las personas con discapacidades, y con esto ayudaría a la ciudad a que esto se pueda mejorar y tener en cuenta a future.
Por qué te complace ser parte del proyecto y qué estás haciendo?
Klever Rojas: Para conocer la ciudad y poder ayudar a una circulación más seguro a los que necesitan.
David Bustamante: Me complace ser parte del proyecto para identificar vías, zonas y espacios en los cuales cualquier tipo de persona pueda y tenga las garantías de circular de manera fácil, segura y fluida. Dentro del proyecto en conjunto con otros compañeros, estamos identificado vías y aceras en los cuales existan problemas de circulación como obstáculos, preferencia al vehículo sabes que al peatón y desniveles sin un tratamiento correcto y efectivo.
Martín Rivera: Colaboro mapeando calles para ser parte de un proceso necesario para la ciudad
Paula Del Salto: Para ayudar a mi país y estoy mapeando aceras
Biandona Recalde: Me gusta poder analizar que elementos están en las veredas y si estos están bien ubicados o no,actualmente estoy mapeando y validando.
Qué le gusta de asociarse con G3ict y el proyecto OpenSidewalks de la Universidad de Washington?
Klever Rojas: Para aprender y contribuir con una mejor ciudad para los transeúntes.
David Bustamante: Que podemos analizar en conjunto la actualidad de la ciudad y apartir de eso buscar soluciones viables para la circulación del paeaton.
Martín Rivera: Además de ayudar, he aprendido algo del funcionamiento del software de mapeo
Paula Del Salto: Me gusta porque es un proyecto para la comunidad y para las personas con capacidades especiales
Biandona Recalde: El conocimiento que he adquirido y saber que esta información ayudará a personas con discapacidad.
Cualquier observación o experiencia personal que crea que es relevante para el proyecto.
Klever Rojas: El identificar que Quito, es una ciudad pensada en el vehículo y que la priorizacion del peatón es algo primordial dentro del desarrollo de la ciudad.
David Bustamante: Me gustaría que muchas más personas participen en el proyecto.
Martín Rivera: Me he dado cuenta que mi ciudad no tiene aceras accesibles siento que es muy difícil la movilización para las personas con capacidades especiales. He visto que hay muchos obstáculos en la mitad de la acera
Paula Del Salto: Como observación podría enfatizar la importancia que debe tener una intervención urbana a nivel de circulación peatonal en Quito. Existen zonas en las que es realmente preocupante ver el ancho, y accesibilidad de las aceras.
Biandona Recalde: Me encanta el proyecto dónde ayuda a todos quienes transitan las calles de la ciudad.

Why are more accessible and inclusive sidewalks important for people with disabilities in the cities?
Klever Rojas: For ease of transportation of pedestrians around the city
David Bustamante: For safe, regular, and free transportation for all users. The mobility of pedestrians with any type of disabilities is important.
Martín Rivera: We need to facilitate mobility for all people. To be able to move around freely is a right that should not be hindered by poor infrastructure.
Paula Del Salto: Because more accessible sidewalks help people move around easily and avoid risks and accidents
Biandona Recalde: Allow an ease of transportation without causing accidents due to obstacles that may be found along the way.
Why is this AI project for Inclusive Mobility so important to your city?
Klever Rojas: It is important for pedestrian safety.
David Bustamante: So that we can have a clear image of circulation and how it currently occurs in the city to ensure that people with disabilities can move around safely and easily within the pedestrian crossings or places of circulation.
Martín Rivera: It will help visualize how poorly planned the pedestrian system really is so we can solve it
Paula Del Salto: For the safety of all inhabitants
Biandona Recalde: Because there are many barriers for people with disabilities, and this will help the city to improve and remain focused on the future.
Why are you pleased to be part of the project and what activities are you performing?
Klever Rojas: To get to know my way around the city and help with a safer transportation of those who need it.
David Bustamante: I am pleased to be a part of the project so I can identify roads, areas, and spaces in which any type of person can be able and has the guarantee that he/she can move around easily, safely, and fluently. Within the project, in collaboration with other partners, we are identifying the roads and sidewalks that present transportation problems, such as obstacles, preference for vehicles over pedestrians, and inclinations without an effective and proper treatment.
Martín Rivera: I collaborate by mapping streets to be a part of a necessary process for the city
Paula Del Salto: To help my country by mapping sidewalks
Biandona Recalde: I like to be able to analyze which elements are found on the sidewalks and whether these are well placed or not; I am currently mapping and validating the usefulness of maps.
What do you like about partnering with G3ict and the University of Washington’s OpenSidewalks project?
Klever Rojas: To be able to learn and contribute with a better city for pedestrians.
David Bustamante: That we can jointly analyze the current status of the city and, with that information, seek feasible solutions for pedestrian movement.
Martín Rivera: Additional to helping, I have learned from the mapping software operation
Paula Del Salto: I like it because it is a project for the community and for especially abled people
Biandona Recalde: The knowledge I have gained and knowing that this information will help people with disabilities.
Any remarks or personal experience you deem relevant for the project?
Klever Rojas: Identifying that Quito is a city thought for vehicles and that prioritizing pedestrians is an essential task within the city development.
David Bustamante: I would like for more people to participate in the project.
Martín Rivera: I have realized that my city does not have accessible sidewalks. I feel moving around is very difficult for people with disabilities. I have noticed that there are plenty of obstacles in the middle of the sidewalk.
Paula Del Salto: As a remark, I could emphasize on the important of an urban intervention at a pedestrian movement level in Quito. There are areas where the width and accessibility of sidewalks is truly concerning.
Biandona Recalde: I really like the project because it helps all those who move around the city streets.
